Why do some filters need to backwash

Released on Aug. 05, 2022

Some filters can only function with backwashing. Like: Automatic Backwash Self-cleaning Filter and Suctorial Type Backwash Filter.

Most drinking water systems use filters to collect, catch, or gather particles from an incoming flow. When the filter’s pores become clogged, they need to be cleaned. So why?

1. In a worst-case scenario, a filter system that didn’t backwash would become so clogged that your home’s water pressure would drop significantly. The contaminants trapped in the media could even begin to bleed into the water supply, causing extra contamination with potentially dangerous levels of impurities.

2. Renews the filtration capacity by clearing the impurities.

3. Facilitates aeration.

When to start the backwash function in a backwash filter?

The cleanliness or cloudiness (turbidity) of the water coming out of the filter just before it goes into the clear well is the best way to determine when to backwash.

You'll know it's time to perform the backwashing routine when the pressure gauge indicates a pressure rise of 8 to 10 pounds above the clean or startup pressure.
