Improving Chemical Coating Filtration Efficiency for Continuous Production

Project Overview

A chemical manufacturer in North America producing coating intermediates faced production limitations caused by an inefficient filtration process.

The existing plate and frame filter press was unable to maintain stable operation when handling high-viscosity materials containing solid particles. Frequent shutdowns for filter cleaning affected production efficiency and increased operating costs.

To improve filtration reliability, the customer upgraded its filtration system with a YUBO automatic self-cleaning filter designed for continuous chemical processing applications.

Customer Challenge

The customer's coating intermediate production process required solid-liquid separation of materials with:

• High viscosity up to 3,000 mPa·s

• Approximately 5% hard solid particles

The original plate and frame filter press created several operational challenges:

1. Frequent Manual Cleaning

After each filtration batch, operators needed to stop the equipment and manually clean filter cloths and related components.

Each cleaning cycle required approximately 4 hours of downtime.

2. High Consumable Consumption

The filter cloth required frequent replacement due to the characteristics of the coating material.

This increased maintenance costs and added operational workload.

3. Production Efficiency Loss

Because filtration was performed in batches, the production line experienced repeated interruptions.

The customer estimated that filtration-related downtime reduced overall production capacity by approximately 15%.

YUBO Filtration System Upgrade

Based on the characteristics of the coating material, YUBO supplied a YGDF-D250 automatic self-cleaning filter to replace the previous plate and frame filtration system.

The upgrade included:

1. Customized Filtration Components

The system was equipped with a 316L stainless steel filter screen to provide corrosion resistance for chemical processing conditions.

The filtration opening size was customized according to the particle characteristics to balance filtration accuracy and flow capacity.

2. Automatic Cleaning Operation

The filter integrated a PLC control system.

During operation, the internal scraper automatically removed accumulated filter cake from the screen surface and discharged solids through the drain valve.

This enabled continuous operation without manual filter cloth replacement.

3. Continuous Online Filtration

Unlike the previous batch filtration process, the YUBO self-cleaning filtration system allowed the customer to maintain continuous production operation.

The filtration, cleaning and discharge process could be completed automatically within the equipment.

Project Results

After six months of continuous operation, the upgraded filtration system achieved significant improvements.

1. Extended Filter Screen Service Life

The 316L stainless steel filter screen operated continuously for more than six months without clogging or damage.

The service life increased from approximately three days to more than six months.

2. Reduced Maintenance Requirements

The replacement frequency of filtration consumables was reduced by approximately 90%.

The automated cleaning process also reduced manual intervention requirements.

3. Improved Production Efficiency

By eliminating frequent shutdowns for cleaning, the production line achieved more stable continuous filtration.

Overall production capacity increased by approximately 20%, while production scheduling became more predictable.
