A large petrochemical producer in South Korea needed to improve filtration on an SBR rubber production line.
The process involved a high-viscosity polymer melt containing gel-like contaminants and hard particles across a relatively broad particle-size range. The existing filtration equipment could not provide sufficient retention of fine gel particles, allowing contaminants to pass into downstream processing.
For the rubber production line, this created a quality-control problem. Particles that passed through the filtration stage could contribute to surface defects in the finished rubber product, while variations in filtration performance affected the stability of first-pass product quality.
The key requirement was therefore not simply higher filtration capacity. The system needed to provide more effective fine-particle retention under high-viscosity, high-temperature, and high-pressure process conditions.
YUBO supplied a DXZF-D1000 candle filter system for the filtration upgrade.
The system uses sintered metal fiber candle filter elements selected for the high-viscosity SBR application. Compared with a conventional filtration arrangement, the metal fiber element provides a larger effective filtration area while maintaining the mechanical strength required for demanding process conditions.
The filter elements are manufactured from 316L stainless steel and use a special fold-on-fold structure. This design increases the available filtration area within the candle element and supports stable filtration of gel particles and hard contaminants.
For this application, the filtration range was 0.5–100 μm, providing the required level of particle retention for the SBR production process.
The DXZF candle filter uses a modular arrangement of filter elements and tube sheet, allowing the filtration unit to be integrated into industrial process lines and maintained as a complete filter module. The DXZF series is designed for demanding filtration applications and can be customized according to process requirements.

The upgraded candle filtration system delivered measurable improvements to the SBR production line:
• 18% increase in filtration efficiency
• 12% reduction in annual equipment maintenance costs
• Reduced product quality defects associated with contaminant carryover
• More stable filtration of the high-viscosity polymer melt
Improved consistency of downstream SBR rubber production
The project demonstrated that filtration performance in polymer production depends not only on filtration rating, but also on filter element structure, effective filtration area, material selection, and compatibility with the process fluid.
For high-viscosity polymer melts, a properly configured candle filter can provide a practical filtration solution where conventional filtration equipment cannot achieve the required particle retention.
This project highlights several factors that are important when filtering high-viscosity polymer materials:
